NASWGA Chapter Psychopathology 15 Module Webinar Course

The NASWGA Psychopathology Course is 45 hours with the same number of hours and content areas found in a 3-credit course offered in a Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) accredited MSW program. There are 15 Modules which you must complete. The course Modules will include the 1) CSWE Core Competency Guidelines; 2) DSM 5; 3) Case Reviews; and 4) Pharmacology. The course will offer you an opportunity to meet the New Testing AND Assessment/Diagnosis Rule 135-12-.02 Requirement Implemented by the Georgia Composite Board of Professional Counselors, Social Workers and Marriage and Family Therapists.

Here are some questions which our chapter addressed that you may find helpful:

1)  Which LCSW is required to take the psychopathology course?

ONLY those LCSW who meet the following criteria: LESS than 10-years direct practice experience prior to April 26, 2016. LESS than 10 years of direct practice experience working with people clients that have mental health, substance abuse, and developmental disabilities. Currently NOT in good standing with the Georgia Composite Board of Professional Counselors, Social Workers and Marriage and Family Therapists.

2) In the 1980s, I received “grandfather” status as an LCSW.  Does the LMSW before LCSW requirement apply to me?

Georgia Composite Board for Professional Counselors, Social Workers and Marriage and Family Therapists started in the 1980s and LMSW/LCSW licensure did not officially exist before then in Georgia.  Many social workers in the 1980s with an MSW and clinical training/experience qualified as LCSW and “grandfathered in”.

3) If I have less than 10 years of direct practice experience before April 26, 2016, working with mental health, substance abuse and disability clients, do I need to take the psychopathology course?

Only if you cannot show proof that you took a psychopathology course in a CSWE accredited MSW program.

4) What are the contents of the psychopathology course offered by NASW Georgia Chapter?

The NASW psychopathology course, in accordance with courses provided at an accredited school of social work, will follow the 1) CSWE Core Competency Guidelines and address the following: a) Professional Ethics, b) Diversity, c) Social Justice, d) Practice-Informed Research, d) Policy Practice, e) Assessment, f) Intervention and g) Evaluation; 2) DSM 5 Training; and 3) Pharmacology.

5) Do the10 years of experience have to be after the LCSW?

No, but only if in the 10-year period the LCSW

a) have taken the psychopathology course at a CSWE accredited MSW program and

b) were engaged in directed practice and supervision with your LMSW and you were working towards taking the LCSW.

6) How many hours is the psychopathology course?

The psychopathology course is 45 hours – which is the same number of hours found in a 3-credit course offered in a CSWE accredited MSW program.

7) How will I receive the Modules?

Once you have registered on the website, the Modules along with tests, homework assignments and accompanying video links will be e-mailed to you.

8) If I have taken a Psychopathology course while in enrolled in an accredited graduate school program, does it meet the Georgia Composite Board for Professional Counselors, Social Workers and Marriage and Family Therapists Psychopathology course requirement?
