Description:
With the older adult population expected to reach 68 million by the year 2030, this demographic shift represents the unprecedented historical trend toward a graying nation. Twenty percent of the U.S. population will be over 65 in 2030 bringing with it lifelong mental health challenges, lifelong substance use and abuse patterns, and new challenges to mental health caused by common changes seen in the aging process.
This workshop will outline current prevalence and trends in older adult mental illness, difficulties in diagnosing older adults, methods for incorporating holistic evaluation and diagnosis, and treatment modalities. The session will further provide an emphasis on the relationship between physical and mental health in this population, evidence-based practice models, and the use of non-traditional or “extenders” for older adult mental health care necessary because of the shortage of trained mental health professionals.
A licensure renewal station will be provided during the NASW-GA Pre-Conference workshops to assist Pre-Conference attendees in renewing licenses online to meet the Current Licensure Cycle Renewal deadline.
